Part 1: Whole Self Series. 8 Emotional Wellbeing Tips for a Calmer, Happier You

Emotional wellbeing isn’t about feeling happy 24/7, it’s about creating the tools and habits to navigate life’s ups and downs without losing yourself in the process. Think of it as emotional resilience with a little self-kindness sprinkled on top.

This is the first post in my Whole Self Wellbeing series: emotional, physical, spiritual, and mental health, because we’re more than just one dimension.

Here are 8 practical tips to try:

1. Start your day with a check-in

Before grabbing your phone, ask yourself: How am I feeling right now? Not how you should feel, just the truth. Naming your emotions takes the charge out of them and helps you respond, not react.

2. Have emotional support activities

Have one or two activities that help you decompress fast. Whether that be a walk, a playlist or a stretch. Use them before you hit breaking point, not after.

3. Practise the pause

When something triggers you, take three deep breaths before speaking or typing. It’s amazing how much chaos this tiny gap can save you from before you respond or react.

4. Keep a ‘gratitude list’

It doesn’t need to be a long journal, just write down one thing each day that made you feel good. It might be a coffee in the sunshine or a text from a friend. It trains your brain to spot the small wins.

5. Say no without guilt

Boundaries protect your energy. A polite “I can’t commit to that right now” is enough, no essay or further justification is required.

6. Limit emotional drainers

Whether it’s doom-scrolling, gossip, or overcommitting, notice what leaves you feeling flat and start to cull. Your energy will thank you.

7. Talk it out early

Don’t let emotions fester. Share what you’re feeling with a trusted friend or professional when it happens and before it becomes a bigger burden to carry.

8. Celebrate your emotional wins

Notice when you handle something better than last time or when you didn’t spiral. Acknowledge it! Progress isn’t just in the big breakthroughs, its all the small wins along the way that build momentum and keep you going.

Rememberm that emotional wellbeing isn’t a fixed state. It’s a daily practice that flexes with your life. Start small, stay curious, and know that every choice you make to protect your emotional space is a step toward feeling grounded and resilient.
